A skateboard shelf is a functional project, not just a different way to hang wall art. Once books or objects are added, the deck and its support must be assessed for that combined use.
What is a skateboard shelf?
A skateboard shelf usually means one of two things: a skateboard deck turned into a shelf board with brackets underneath, or a shelf or rack built to store and display boards. The first is a DIY furniture project; the second is a display solution. If your main goal is to show the artwork on a deck, a dedicated wall mount or a separate shelf below the deck is usually the simpler route.
Decide what the shelf needs to do
A display for one small object is different from storage for a row of books. Include the shelf's own weight, the contents and the possibility of objects being moved.
A skateboard's riding construction does not provide a published shelf load rating.
Choose a documented support system
Use a purpose-built shelf or an appropriately designed bracket arrangement with clear installation information. If adapting a deck, have the structure assessed rather than guessing that ordinary wall-art mounts are enough.
Support placement, deck curvature and the retaining arrangement all matter. Do not rely on a homemade rope or adhesive setup without an appropriate assessment.
Protect the artwork
Books and objects may rub or scratch the printed surface. Avoid fastening through important parts of the graphic if preservation is your priority.
A deck used as a shelf may be better regarded as a repurposed functional object than a preserved collectible.
Compare alternatives
A separate shelf with skateboard wall art above it can provide the same visual relationship without asking the art deck to carry stored objects.
For a decorative project, plan the room's layout first and select suitable components second. The fact that a deck looks like a shelf does not establish that it can safely serve as one.
Skateboard shelf FAQ
Can I use an art deck as a shelf?
It is possible as a DIY project, but it changes the deck from a display piece into a piece of furniture. The deck has no published load rating, so the brackets and wall fixing have to carry the load, and the printed surface will be exposed to wear.
Is a shelf or a wall mount better for displaying a skateboard deck?
For showing artwork, a wall mount is the more direct option: it holds the deck and leaves the graphic visible. A shelf makes more sense when you also want storage. Many people combine both, with the deck mounted on the wall and a shelf placed underneath it.
Do DeckArts decks include a mount or a shelf?
No. DeckArts decks have nothing on the back and are not ready to hang. Each deck takes one wall mount, which is sold separately in our display accessories.
